Is any app worth and 842 MB of an iPad? Absolutely. Like The Elements, the first title from Touch Press, Solar System for iPad by Marcus Chown is like finger candy — fun to explore, yet nutritional also, containing features that make abstract concepts, like planet rotation, easier to understand. Nearly every photo can be examined in detail, by zooming in or out and a slider bar on the bottom of the screen lets you navigate from the sun out. Content includes 200 “pages” of factual information, not counting the hundreds of NASA photos. The book is a partnership between Faber and Faber, one of Britain’s oldest publishers, and Touch Press, a new media company. See the review in the January 2011 issue of Children’s Technology Review.
